The three of us

Skipper Paul reporting:

Tonight’s urgent call out was for a small 3m dingy that was seen by a member of the public about 800m off Scott’s Landing. It appeared to be sinking.

When we got to our boat in the marina Airberth Al had already stared the process and the boat was sinking into the water.  We all jumped on board and made our way around Mullet point and into the Mahurangi.

Auckland’s Trillion Alpha and Hibiscus II were also both attending as Alpha was not far away (at Tiri Island) and Hibiscus was arguably closer than us. It was getting to twilight, and, if required, a search would be far more efficient with the three boats.

As it happened, by the time we arrived, a kayaker had towed the boat into shore (Great job). It hadn’t been sinking but it did have engine trouble. Thankfully both crew were wearing lifejackets, so if they had been sinking, they had a much better chance of surviving.

Hibiscus II is a Sealegs and so they drove ashore to check on the two crew and then came out to meet up with us and Trillion Alpha.

It was certainly pleasant to meet up with our neighbouring crews under more social circumstances with our customers safely on shore.

Thanks to the other units for their timely appearance and to our crew Thelma, Rob and Mark and Airberth Al, who was also there on our return.  Great response to what could have been much more serious.
