ABOUT COASTGUARD KAWAU

We are a registered charity and are are part of Coastguard Tautiaki Moana (Royal NZ Coastguard) and one of 64 individual units nationwide. At a national level Coastguard Tautiaki Moana works hard to provide a range of safety information, education and other services to help Kiwis stay safe on the water.

Our unit is manned by a dedicated team of 30 local volunteers who collectively contribute around 4000 hours each year. Our area of operation is from Bream Tail in the north, to south of the Mahurangi River and we also attend callouts as far out as the 12-mile limit, beyond Great Barrier Island and the Mokohinau Islands, an area of approximately 6500 sq km.

Our primary aim is Saving Lives at Sea, on call 24 hours 365 days of the year in all weather and sea conditions.

We respond to more than 100 callouts each year and last year our unit brought more than 220 people home safely. We collaborate with the NZ Search & Rescue Centre, NZ Police, FENZ and Hato Hone St John on a wide range of life threatening emergencies both at sea and onshore around our operational coastline.
