Skipper Paul reporting
Sunday 6 September 2026
Just after 0700 we had a call from Ops to go to a flat battery in Shark Bay on Kawau Island. Shark Bay is in Bon Accord Harbour, just next to Two House Bay.
The call had come in at 0500 but since they were anchored and safe, the duty officer in Auckland was good enough not to call us until 0700.
Off we went down to the boat, launching into a still calm morning with beautiful sunshine. Kawau was idyllic and our customers were enjoying and early morning fish.
The jump start was slightly problematic since there were in total 4 batteries. We put the jump pack on the big battery and quickly the starboard engine started no problem, gauges said the batteries were charging .
The port just clicked. Solenoid, stuck starter motor or what? After banging the starter motor we tried again, still no joy. In the end looking at the three smaller batteries two were wired together in series, so we put the pack on these and hey presto the port engine started.
We did try following the leads to see what battery to what engine but they went into a conduit never to be seen again until appearing at the starter motors.
Anyway happy customers and we waited to see them up anchor and make way. Then we returned home. Total time just over two hours.
Thanks again to Derek and Sean who were out last night, then also to Andrew who subbed in for Craig who was helping start some yacht races in the bay (some suspect this is really code for fishing…)
